Daniel Hoskins Dutton ~























My Grandfather, Daniel Hoskins Dutton ~ born 1861 - died 1937. Like my Dad, he was the 7th son of a 7th son. Watercolor.

The text is from the Civil War monument ~ "Here oft duty till the last reveille..." something that he would have read, many times. It seems to me that it relates to his life, and I wonder if he thought that too. He was carried away from the battlefield by Pete when he was two years old. I'm sure he looked at this very same puddle too. There are only two of these rain catching depressions in the stones poking up out of the hill, and they are unusual. It wasn't until I was in the midst of the painting that I realized there was a connection with The Stone Man ~ this is an image of Narcissus. (!) & that cosmic image, when gazed at, ALWAYS initiates a perpetual reverie.

I've got to re-photograph the painting. I've done a lot of work on it since I took the picture yesterday morning.
