A Shagbark Elf:

There are lots of these on the knobs around dandyland. They are nuts. Once you make clothes for them they disappear until the next solstice.

Shagbark is one of the great smoking woods. A friend in California sent me some once, and I made it last through numerous pigfests.

Is Shagbark what I remember as Hickory?

Yes! The elf's head is a shagbark hickory nut. It's a pretty tree with outlandish looking bark.

The flaovr of Hickory nuts is still strong in my memory. If I was extra good, there would always be a few in my Christmas stocking.

I made hickory nut pie for thanksgiving this year, a specialty of my aunt Gladiator. It took some doing, cracking and picking to get enough, but the results were worth it.
